Re-imagining sites of clairvoyance and hope.
Psychic Visions examines the way people attempt to make sense of reality, chaos, restriction, and things unseen. Throughout Covid, once-busy streets became isolated, businesses closed, and shopfronts were boarded up. However, within the chaos, the collective psyche of society was apparent in the urban landscape—there remained a utopian glimmer of hope.
Artist Anna Carey explores this polarisation through images of slightly decayed, isolated psychic shops. With their mystical names and bright lights, these stores offer a fantasy and freedom to imagine a new reality. The escapism is heightened by inserting the artist’s own real life phone number into the seductive new-age neon signage, inviting viewers to escape with her into a fantasy world.
Featuring a selection of new images exhibited for the first time, Carey’s works demonstrate that within every utopia there is an element of dystopia. In unprecedented times, with a shifting collective conscious and existential concern, Anna Carey reminds us that the future is unknown.
Anna Carey is an Australian artist based between the Gold Coast Australia and Los Angeles.
Creating fictive miniature architectural spaces based on vernacular iconic architecture which she photographs and films. Anna Carey received a Bachelor of Visual Media with Honours (first class) from Griffith University in Queensland and recently completed her Doctorate (2021).
In 2018 Carey’s work was acquired for the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) from Carey’s 2015 Stardust series. In 2019, the Soho House in Downtown Los Angeles acquired artworks from Carey’s Twilight (2014), Stardust (2016) and In Search of Rainbows (2017) series, as well as commissioning Carey to create a new work which is also on display in their new Downtown location in Los Angeles. Her works have also been acquired for the collections of Artbank, The Gold Coast City Art Gallery, The National Gallery of Australia, The University of Queensland and various major corporate and private collections.
Carey has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout Australia and internationally and her work has been curated into various regional galleries and other significant institutional exhibitions. Carey currently has a solo exhibition at LAX international airport in Los Angeles.
