Guy Maestri
Guy Maestri is an Archibald Prize-winning Australian artist. Although he is noted for his plein air painting and strong connection to landscape, Maestri also uses still life and portraiture to investigate the conventions of painting. His work speaks of materiality, gesture and observation. 'I look at things, I see them and I paint them. But I strive to work beyond simply observing and rendering, to try to make works that speak of humanity, landscape and the environment,' Maestri explains.
Born in Mudgee, NSW in 1974, Maestri completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons) in painting at the National Art School in 2003. He has exhibited throughout Australia and won numerous awards, including the 2009 Archibald Prize for his portrait of Australian singer and musician Geoffrey Gurramul Yunupingu. His work is held in significant public and private collections, including the National Portrait Gallery, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Art Gallery of South Australia, Macquarie Bank, Artbank, and Parliament House.
