Introducing

Elynor Smithwick’s painting process is contemplative and cyclical, involving both accumulation and erasure. Focusing on the stillness of daily life, her inspiration often comes from fleeting moments—sunsets, shifting skies—that offer a quiet sense of presence and connection. These ephemeral glimpses uncover beauty within the ordinary.

At the heart of Smithwick’s approach is her method of layering. Her artworks are never fixed; they shift and morph over time. The beginning of a composition may morph into something else and she may veil it with a fresh coat of white paint—a gesture that opens space for new ideas while subtly preserving the past. Faint traces linger beneath, echoing memory’s persistence: altered, but not erased.

Smithwick completed a Bachelor of Fine Art with Honors at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2019. In 2022 she undertook the ‘Summer Arts Residency’ in Provence, France, with Gallery Amelie du Chalard and was the recipient of ‘The Macfarlane Fund Residency’ (2020) and the ‘Buller Arts Residency Award’ (2019).
