Jun Chen (b. 1960), based in Brisbane, trained in traditional Chinese brush painting at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, China. He migrated to Australia in 1990, and completed his masters in fine art at the Queensland University of Technology. Since the late 1990s he has exhibited regularly in Australia and Asia.

Recognisable by their thickly applied paint and expressive, gestural quality, his oil paintings are held in public institutions including the collection of Parliament House, Canberra, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and Guangzhou Art Gallery in China, and in private collections throughout Australia and abroad.

Chen has also been a regular finalist in the Archibald and Wynne prizes, and in 2021 he was a finalist in both: with a portrait of artist Joe Furlonger and a landscape painted in central Queensland.

Landscape painting is a worthy subject in his homeland China - as it is in Australia – and the artist follows in the long tradition of Australian artists capturing the beauty of the outback.

For this exhibition, Chen includes more recent scenes from outback Queensland, as well as tropical wetlands and vast expanses of wildflowers in Western Australia.
